What does CAN/MOD Stand for?

While checking the PNR status of your train tickets, you might have seldom encountered CAN/MOD. These are not one of the more popular Reservation Status Codes in the railway arsenal, so many passengers tend to get confused. Simply put, CAN stands for Cancelled, and MOD stands for Modified.

With the introduction of this comprehensive digital platform, this system modernised Indian Railways' asset management landscape. CAN/MOD centralises the acquisition, maintenance, and modification processes to enhance train seat availability, reduce redundancies, and promote data-driven decision-making. It also enables real-time monitoring and integrates procurement strategies.

What does CAN/MOD Mean?

Now that you have a generic overview of the specified terms. Let's dive into what CAN/MOD means.

CAN or Cancelled denotes a scenario where Indian Railways has marked a ticket for cancellation after assigning a PNR number to it. Remember that this PNR number won’t be further allotted to any other ticket, and the cancelled ticket will eventually be "flushed."

In railways terminology, flushed tickets remain online after five days of the journey but are stored in a database before being eventually removed from the railways' server.

MOD or Modified denotes a scenario where a passenger has modified their ticket after the Indian Railways assigns a PNR number to it. This usually happens when any railway official or passenger alters their journey details such as their names, travel class, date of journey, etc.
