What is IRCTC e-Catering?

Gone are the days when you had to compromise on food while travelling. IRCTC is now serving you fresh meals from your choice of source. You can purchase not just train tickets but also food.

The IRCTC e-catering service is an initiative by the Indian Railways that allows passengers to order from a list of restaurants and have food delivered directly to their seats. You can book your meals through the Food on Track app or via the IRCTC official e-catering online portal. You need your PNR number and an online payment method.

You don't have to carry your food on your train journey and get hot food delivered when needed. The only compromise here would be that you have to depend on the timing. The food will be delivered only at selected railway stations, and you will need to wait until the train arrives.

Benefits of IRCTC e-Catering

Booking food through the IRCTC e-catering service is advantageous in many ways.

  • The restaurants that you choose from are carefully selected by IRCTC and you can completely trust the food from any of them.

  • This service is available at over 300 stations, both minor and major railway stations.

  • Not everyone may be a fan of the limited menu at the IRCTC pantry. This e-catering is a healthy alternative.

  • You will have more food options to select from. This is highly convenient for many who are picky eaters.

  • You can save time cooking at home and from waiting at the restaurants to pick your food.

  • It is convenient for families with kids if they want to have pizza. Yes, you can even have ‘Pizza’ delivered to your seat.

  • No more late arrivals or missing trains due to food woes.

  • Moreover, e-catering on trains offers food at affordable rates.

  • The best part is that it is easy to book online and can cancel online in case you decide not to have it this way.

  • Most importantly, both the online portal and the app are user-friendly so that you can easily navigate and place the order.

  • You can book food for a single person, or a family, or place a bulk order for a group of people as well.

How Does Food Delivery on a Train Work?

IRCTC e-catering is a revolutionary move by the railways to promote food security for passengers. It is a way of ensuring not just fresh food but also the guarantee for tasty food.

Giving the PNR is mandatory for food delivery to work. This way, the vendor can identify your coach and seat number. Moreover, the PNR ensures that you have a valid train ticket to travel, as the e-catering is available only for passengers.

How to Book Food through the IRCTC App?

  • Go to the “Food on Track” app or visit the online portal https://www.ecatering.irctc.co.in/.

  • Find your PNR number from your ticket and type it in.

  • This will be a 10-digit number and an important factor in helping you place the order.

  • After providing the PNR number,  you will choose the station at which you need the delivery.

  • Choose the station from the options and you will get the list of restaurants that serve this station.

  • Now, you can see the restaurant options and choose one of them.

  • Surf through their menu and select the food.

  • Choose a convenient payment option to place the order.

  • Wait until the train reaches the chosen station and get your food right at your seat.

You can check your location by tracking the live train running status through the IRCTC app.

Conclusion

Travelling by train has never been this easy. From online ticket booking to getting food delivered to your seats, Indian Railways has come a long way with its digitisation. Railways have clearly understood their role and are truly catering to the needs of passengers. IRCTC e-catering is a way of implementing technology to its best use.
